Jože Plečnik

The Pioneer of Modern Architecture

Share: FB TW

Jože Plečnik left an indelible mark on Slovenian architecture. One of the greatest architects of the 20th century and a pioneer of modern architecture transformed the image of Ljubljana to such an extent that Slovenes now call it Plečnik's Ljubljana.

The great architectural master placed great emphasis on recycling. In his church of St. Michael in Ljubljansko Barje, we can find chandeliers made of coffee grinders and glasses and support pillars made of water pipes. World fame was brought to him by ingenious conceptual designs for Ljubljana's Tromostovje, Tržnica, the Ljubljanica embankment, Kongresni trg, Tivoli and the building of the National and University Library.

The Vienna Church of the Holy Spirit, designed by Plečnik, is considered one of the first churches in Europe to be made of reinforced concrete. During construction, it stirred the spirits due to its avant-garde at the time. Due to this work, Plečnik became one of the pioneers of modern architecture in Europe.
